Here’s what you will do as Mechanical Designer:  

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Designer will engage in the development of cable manufacturing machinery to rival industry leaders. This collaborative role involves working with cross-functional engineering and production teams, requiring a team player mindset. The position is essential for Roteq’s engineering projects and directly impacts company growth and customer satisfaction.    

Key Responsibilities of a Mechanical Designer: 

  • Mechanical design, development, and incremental improvement of cable manufacturing systems. 

  • Technical in-depth calculations related to speed and torque ratios, power consumption, bearing life, stress and load calculations applicable to machine validation and development. 

  • Component design, including material selection, manufacturing methods, assembly sequence, fits and tolerance stack-up. 

  • Creation and management of project documentation, including detailed engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), technical reports, manuals, and machine layouts. 

  • Standardization of parts and sub-assemblies across the product lines. 

  • Participation in special projects as assigned for the overall benefit of the company. 

    What we look for in a Mechanical Designer: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. 

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience (including co-op terms and/or graduate programs) in mechanical design and development of industrial equipment. 

  • Team-oriented with strong interpersonal and presentation skills, along with excellent verbal and written communication abilities. 

  • Ability to analyze and design machine components and assemblies using the fundamental principles of solid mechanics, dynamics, and material science. 

  • Experience in structural analysis of machine components and assemblies using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). 

  • Understanding of manufacturing processes for metal components, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and fastening. 

  • Fluency in CAD modeling using SolidWorks PDM and AutoCAD. 

  • Ability to interpret and create detailed engineering drawings for parts and assemblies. 

  • Passion for excellence, integrity, and attention to detail. 

  • Willingness to travel occasionally to customer sites for technical assessments and equipment maintenance. 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Hands-on experience with the assembly of industrial machinery and machine shop operations. 

  • Understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles. 

  • Understanding geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). 

  • Familiarity with North American mechanical engineering standards and design codes. 

  • Knowledge of engineering documentation control principles. 

  • Participation in undergraduate applied engineering and design clubs & teams. 

  • Experience in the cable manufacturing industry or with similar rotary equipment.
